Mim is a work experience student who leant valuable skills from Mellori’s electronic engineers and technicians. Mim tells us about her passion for engineering and plans for the future.

What is mechatronics engineering?

Mechatronics engineering is a combination of mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering.

How did you become interested in engineering?

I became interested in engineering through a robotics program called FIRST. It helped me become aware of my passion for engineering and problem solving, while helping me to improve my teamwork and public speaking skills.

What kinds of things did you learn at Mellori?

I learnt about the different types of electrical signals, analog and digital and how to convert analog signals to digital ones. I also learnt about different conventions when drawing electrical diagrams and how capacitors are used. Learning how to solder surface-mount components was very tricky but lots of fun!

Rumour has it that you made your own audio amplifier while working here? You also soldered your own PCB and learnt how to program and connect sensors and LCD screens. Can you briefly tell us more about this?

Yes! I was able to make my own audio amplifier on a breadboard, we were able to look at the sound waves being amplified on the oscilloscope, and I was able to amplify music from the headphone jack from my own phone. I also learnt how to use an Arduino Nano, and programmed it to do different things like light up LEDs and display on a small LCD screen.

How did you find out about work experience opportunities at Mellori?

I went to the Shoalhaven Professional Snapshot Day at the beginning of 2020 and there were presenters there promoting GDS and Mellori.

Do you have any advice for students interested in work experience at Mellori?

Take the opportunity! I had a wonderful time and highly recommend this to anyone who is able. Be prepared to learn heaps about many different things. What I was learning aligned with my engineering studies, physics and mathematics advanced courses, so if you are doing any of those courses work experience at Mellori would be perfect.
