Staff spotlight: Meet Darrel Madden
What’s your role at Mellori?
Senior Electronic Warfare Support Technician.
Briefly describe your current role.
Provide training support and solutions to the ADF (Australian Defence Force), predominantly Army, in Electronic Warfare (EW), as well as explore opportunities for business development in the Asia-Pacific region.
What are your skills and capabilities?
- Army Veteran
- Top Secret (PV) security clearance
- Diploma in Leadership and Management
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
- Certificate III in Electromagnetic Reconnaissance
Briefly describe your career before joining Mellori.
Prior to commencing with Mellori Solutions, I worked with another Defence Industry partner, with the responsibility of delivering and supporting EW manpack solution to Army at the tactical level. This was my first civilian employment since separating from the ADF in November 2018, after 15 years of service in the Army as an EW Operator. My time in the Army saw me employed in strategic, tactical and special operations environments, of which I was fortunate enough to deploy to East Timor, Afghanistan, and Iraq on multiple occasions.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I have a love / hate relationship with renovations. Being a cabinet maker (before Army) I’ve got enough building and construction knowledge to get myself into just enough trouble. Luckily, I have a good network of friends that can pull me out of trouble!
Describe your last adventure.
We went camping a short time ago, just south of Toowoomba. Embarking on a ‘short’ bush walk, on a relatively poorly sign posted trail saw the short bush walk take about 5 hours, with 3 kids in tow, in rather poorly appointed footwear. The kids approach bush walks with a level of trepidation now, as you might imagine.
What brought you to Toowoomba?
Being posted to Borneo Barracks (just North of Toowoomba) in 2018 to Army Headquarters, it was at that time my wife and I made the decision to make Toowoomba a home for a family that was growing up and needed stability.
Is Toowoomba a good place to live?
Fantastic, great weather and nice people. A developing hub for Defence business in SE QLD is an advantage too.
